The Origins and Magic of Slide Guitar

It’s a hot sultry night on the Mississippi delta. The full moon casts it’s translucent light on the fields and swamp oak trees. The lingering smell of barbecue and wisteria mix with honeysuckle and tobacco smoke. Someone picks up an old guitar and begins to play a familiar tune.

The sound is unmistakable, cutting right to your heart, and emotions. It’s distinctive voice, almost human-like, hangs in the night air like a soulful cry. That is the signature sound of the slide guitar.

The prevailing wisdom attributes its birth to the old single string instrument called the jitterbug, used by black musicians around the turn of the 20th century. This instrument was simply a length of thin wire stretched between two nails on a post and played using an old bone or heavy nail. One could play a lead line or improvise an accompaniment to folk, blues, and spiritual songs. The jitterbug was essentially one of the first blues instruments.

There are ancient African instruments much like the jitterbug but using a gourd resonator with the single string. It, also, was played with a bone sliding up and down a neck to change pitches.

There is one secret to learning the guitar faster. Stick with the basics. You might not like it but honestly it is the secret that makes anybody good at what they do and here’s why: Any skill needs to have a solid foundation.

OK, hang in there while I pull some wisdom out of my hat and share it with you. (Cue the new age music and here we go):

Ever tried to start a campfire by holding a match to a big log? It doesn’t work. No matter how cold you are, you have to start small. Get some dry sticks and leaves and start a small fire, protect it carefully and add slightly bigger wood until it gets enough momentum to put the logs on.

There. Am I a guru or what? Ha, Ha! But it’s true. Same thing with learning guitar. You start small and work up. Get a few chords that feel more and more comfortable to play. Stay with them for days and weeks. Then start to add other chords very slowly.

It’s important to also include fun things in your practice sessions for two reasons:

One- Practicing can become dull and humdrum when you are only seeing slow progress. Even though you are moving forward, it might not seem like it to you.

Two- If something is not fun and engaging, you might stop doing it. That would be a real shame. Remember what I always say about five years!

It will go by anyway so if you slip a guitar and some practice in the mix, you will be playing when you get there! I started saying that more than five years ago. It is still true.

1- Play for only two minutes and make yourself stop. Just two minutes, but you have to play the entire 120 seconds.

2- Learn an open tuning (when all the strings are tuned to a chord even when you don’t use any fingering) and just practice strumming patterns.

3-  See if you can pick out a simple tune like ‘Happy Birthday’ and play the entire song on one string. Then try different strings.

4- See how bad you can play (I am serious) and laugh at yourself. Then make a slight improvement  and go back and forth between bad and good.

5- Learn to chime. Go online and watch some of the amazing guitar players who have mastered chiming. (look up natural harmonics- guitar.)

So grab your axe and get to it.

Practice every day or as often as you can and be aware of your tendency to get bored. Relax and enjoy your guitar strumming patterns and chord fingerings. Inch by inch it’s a cinch.
