Many guitarists want to try their hands to build their own guitars but do not know where to start. Fortunately there are several solutions to their problems buying parts and assembling their own guitar, or guitar kit. First decide whether you want an electric guitar or bass, or acoustic guitar. The process to build an electric guitar and bass are the same.
Guitar Parts or Kits for Electric Guitar
If you want an electric guitar, there are some things you can do. You can even find the parts that are finished that you just put together. There are several problems with the assembly of finished parts. If the parts that do not fit, you have to sand or otherwise work on the parts thus destroying or marring the finish that you just bought. It may be better to buy the parts that have not been completed, unless you can find the parts that are guaranteed factory authorized replacement. If you buy parts from sources separate, you may need to tweak them. You do not have a full workshop full of tools, sandpaper, files, and may have to chisel all you need to form a neck or the neck pocket, where you’ll likely run into problems. You may need a reamer if your tuners are not in accordance with the drilled hole in your neck. In addition you will need a soldering iron for electronics and a variety of screwdriver to install the bridge, tuners, pickguard, strap buttons, etc.

need except the tools, you will usually need a screwdriver, sandpaper, hobby knife, and soldering iron. Some electronic devices that come with the snap together so you do not need solder. Be prepared to do some tweaking to get the match though. I’ve gotten Saga guitar kit in which the bridge was actually higher quality than the stock. Look around the net for reviews, many people have great success with the Saga guitar kit, they are cheap, easy to assemble and requires minimal equipment. Most people want to finish with spray cans, this is the cheapest option for one-off guitar.
Acoustic Guitar Kits
If you want to build an acoustic guitar then you’ll probably want an acoustic guitar kit. These come in various stages of construction, there is almost like building a guitar from scratch, there is almost like a “bolt together” kit electric guitar. Unless you are really serious, get a guitar with a pre-bend side. If you do not you will need a special tool called a pipe bends, which are costly to purchase. It’s simple to build, but you may have trouble source parts, and really bent over the side is a challenge, too. You probably will need some tools from you will build an electric guitar from parts. You may need a small plane, like a block plane and may see, and the purfling cutter router or a special tool to cut the channel for binding. This is much more difficult than building acoustic electric guitar, and you’ll need at least some woodworking skills. Completing an acoustic guitar is basically identical to the electricity.
